Several hospitals in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces were damaged by the powerful earthquake that rocked the North on Monday night, but they are still open and providing medical services, public health permanent secretary Narong Sahamethapat said on Tuesday.*

Speaking after a meeting to assess the*damage, Dr Narong said two hospitals in Chiang Rai sustained heavy damage.

At Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital in Muang district, cracks were found on the Somdet Ya building. Patients had been moved to another building normally used by*outpatients.

In Mae Lao district, a building of Mae Lao Hospital collapsed after its walls crumbled, leaving iron rods visible. *The building was closed. *Tents were set up for hospital staff to continue with services.

Seventeen patients were transferred to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital.

In Phan district,*a doctor's living quarters had cracks in the walls.

An 83-year-old woman died in Chiang Rai after being hit by*pieces falling off a wall.

In Chiang Mai, cracks were found on some buildings of Nakhon Ping, Fang, Phaya Mengrai and Maharat hospitals but they did not affect their operations.

There were no reports of damage to hospitals in Phayao, Phrae and Lampang, said Dr Narong, adding that he would travel to the quake-hit areas for an inspection this afternoon.

Dr Vachira Pengchan, the public health deputy permanent secretary, said the ministry had regularly held earthquake drills for staff at hospitals in the North and the West in areas prone to*earthquakes.
