An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

SINGAPORE: With more sports events in Singapore and more people taking part, Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said necessary safety precautions must be taken.

His comments came after 24-year-old full-time national serviceman Chia Wee Kiak died from serious head injuries after falling off his bicycle at the OCBC Cycle Singapore event on March 30.

"Every activity entails some level of risk. I mean anything can happen. Let's see what we can learn from it,” said Mr Tan, referring to the March 30 accident. “But we shouldn't, as a result of incidents, stop being active."

He added that accidents happen for all sorts of reasons.

"But let's try to understand it (why accidents happen), minimise them and take the necessary precautionary measures. But if certain things are inherently dangerous, then I think we've got to look at them again," said Mr Tan.

Mr Tan was speaking to the media on Saturday on the sidelines of the Heron Watch field trip at Jurong Lake.

Despite the morning rain, some 150 volunteers were up bright and early for the Heron Watch.

It was part of an island-wide survey to understand the population numbers, distribution and habits of herons in Singapore
