SINGAPORE: A protest against the recent fare hike was held at Hong Lim Park on Saturday evening.

Some of those who joined the protest had walked or cycled from their homes.

The two-hour event was organised by Mr Gilbert Goh from transitioning.org.

Speakers, including Reform Party member Osman Sulaiman, expressed their dissatisfaction with the fare hike.

The Public Transport Council had announced that bus and train fares will go up by 3.2 per cent from April this year.

They said the increase could not be justified given the number of train breakdowns in the last few years.

They also complained about high COE prices.

Mr Goh also said that there were plans to burn an effigy of Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew which was shown to the crowd during the protest.

However, Mr Goh said he did not go ahead with this as the police told him that doing so is illegal.
