In an interview with Bloomberg TV aired on Friday (27 Dec), Acting Minister Tan Chuan-Jin opined that the People’s Action Party (PAP) will “certainly be governing Singapore in the near future”.
PAP still has the support of many, he said.

“They believe that PAP remains the party that is in a good position to lead and to govern. Certainly in the near future, perhaps also in the medium term.”

But many Singaporeans want more options and competition, he noted. That is for the people to decide, and “that’s what democracy is”, he said.

He was also asked what former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew’s “deepest imprint” on Singapore was.

Mr Tan named two things: A largely corruption-free system, and a government that is “prepared to make the calls”.

Even as Singapore evolves and political pressures mount, the government remains mindful of the danger of becoming populist, according to Mr Tan.

“Listening to people, engaging, isn’t about being populist,” he noted. “But making a policy, still believing that that’s in the best interests of the people, remains – I think – sacrosanct.”

Mr Tan also said that he does not resent the changing landscape. A questioning, challenging electorate “keeps us on our toes”, he said.

In contrast to Acting Minister Tan’s more conciliatory tone towards dissenting voices, Minister Chan Chun Sing has adopted a battle-hardened stance towards people who do not support the government’s policies.
At the PAP party convention early this month, Minister Chan said PAP will “do battle everywhere as necessary”, including the social media (‘Minister Chan: We will do battle everywhere (http://www.tremeritus.com/2013/12/14/minister-chan-we-will-do-battle-everywhere/)‘):
We must not concede the space – physical or cyber. We will have to learn from the 1960 generation of PAP pioneers – to fight to get our message across at every corner – every street corner, cyberspace corner be it in the mass media, and social media. We will have to do battle everywhere as necessary.
Mr Chan’s statement was picked up by higly-respected opposition member Mr Chiam See Tong who remarked:
I do not understand why the PAP wants to fight dissenting voices, since the voices come from the voters. It doesn’t make sense for the PAP to fight those who have put them in power. The government’s policies have created much unhappiness.
Former opposition politician, Dr Wong Wee Nam, also criticized Minister Chan (‘PAP’s Battle Cry (http://www.tremeritus.com/2013/12/28/pap%e2%80%99s-battle-cry/)‘):
Why is Mr Chan talking about learning from the past? Singapore today is a different society from the one in the ‘60s. Society is now more complex and the issues more diverse. The people are more educated and are exposed to a different world. Their problems are also different. Today, many Singaporeans are having difficulty trying to catch up with progress. A lot of them are under intense pressure from rising costs of living and having to compete with foreigners for jobs. They face inflation as a result of the rising costs of food, housing and transportation. Some face problems of stagnant wages. The poor and elderly have to struggle with no income and high healthcare costs.

Singapore’s problem is not about Singaporeans becoming more vocal and making a lot of noise on the internet. Our problem is that we live in a city with a small geographical land area without a hinterland. This problem is compounded by the rapid influx of foreigners and temporary sojourners. In proportion, the native population is getting smaller and becoming a minority.
During the interview with Bloomberg, Mr Tan also refuted allegations that the foreign workers allegedly involved in the recent riot were living in poor conditions.

While substandard worker housing does exist here, the rioters’ accommodation met official standards, he told Bloomberg.

“So they are not living in some decrepit shack somewhere,” he said.
