Speaking to local media today (12 Dec) at the end of his visit to South Korea, PM Lee said Singaporeans have taken the riot at Little India peacefully and calmly.

However, he said that the authorities must make clear that rioting is unacceptable and the incident has to be dealt with firmly. Those who have been charged will experience the due process of law.
He noted that the anxiety and alarm among Singaporeans is understandable but cautioned that if people expressed themselves in unreserved or xenophobic terms, even on the internet, that would be unhelpful.
When asked if the riot would affect Singapore’s foreign worker policy, Mr Lee stressed that the country needs foreign workers. He said if the country did not have them, the nation’s housing or public transport plans would not be achieved and Singaporeans would be severely affected.

What is needed is how to better manage these migrant workers, he said.

Mr Lee pointed out that even though there are nearly one million foreign workers in Singapore, only about 400 were involved in the riot. He stressed that this was a specific circumstance, a localised riot.
He said that it would be unfair for Singaporeans to pinpoint other foreign workers who were not involved in the riot and say that they are a problem. They are making a contribution to Singapore’s economy. The government cannot accept that, and that is not wise, he added.

Mr Lee noted that there are a lot of people following the news internationally and two Korean investors have even asked him about it. He said as this is significant news, the government must be very proper in its response, and Singaporeans too have to be very measured and responsible in their reactions as a people.

Meanwhile, the government is not taking any chances and will be installing 26 CCTVs in Little India. The police actually started installing them on Tuesday (10 Dec).
The police also announced it will be stepping up its presence at Geylang, Golden Mile and Little India.

The bus operators which ferry workers to and from Little India are also jittery. They said that more should be done to improve safety at the pick-up points in Little India.
The riot on Sunday (8 Dec) was sparked when an Indian foreign worker was knocked down and killed by a private bus at a pick-up point.
