See old lady crossing road and got time to horn two separate times but didn't bother to brake at all until much later, this lorry driver is really too much. Yet only jailed for half year, Singaporean life is cheap in the hands of foreign driver. Driving ban of 8 years is a joke, he will be back to his home country way before that.

Lorry driver gets jail, 8 years ban for causing elderly woman's death

When lorry driver Samsel Mang Mang saw an elderly woman crossing Yishun Ring Road, he sounded his horn once, then again as he drove nearer.

Yet instead of slowing down, he slammed on the brakes when the lorry was only a car's length away, hitting 88-year-old Wong Jee Wah when she was just two steps away from the kerb, reports The Straits Times.

She died the next day.

Yesterday, the 49-year-old was sent to jail for six months and given an eight-year driving ban after he admitted to committing a rash act and causing the woman's death.

District Judge Low Wee Ping said "this case illustrates the need to be extremely careful and not to take risks", especially when some older pedestrians are slow to react.

Samsel, a delivery driver for Tuck Lee Ice for eight years, had been travelling on Yishun Ring Road the last two years at least twice a day - at 5am on the way to work and at about 8pm while returning home.

At around 8.15pm on Oct 5 last year, it seems familiarity led to complacency.

A witness to the accident told police that she was cycling along the road when she heard the lorry's horn as it was about three car lengths from a signalised pedestrian crossing in front of Yishun Junior College.

Madam Wong, who was crossing the road about 10m after the pedestrian crossing, tried moving faster after hearing the horn.

The witness noticed how the lorry failed to slow down, and instead sounded the horn again when it was two car lengths from the pedestrian. By then, it was too late. Madam Wong died at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital from severe head injuries.

For committing a rash act that caused a death, Samsel, who said he was under the 50kmh speed limit, could have been jailed for up to five years and fined up to $10,000.
