We’re a group of small retailers who do business in Chinatown. We are very disturbed with what we seen recently – a rampant comeback of the Massage Parlours in Chinatown. Despite the previous crackdown of the massage parlours, many of these seedy joints are returning with much greater numbers – Many of these joints offer commercial sex and they try to avoid raiding by disguising their joints as Beauty Salons or Hairdressing Spa.

Over the past many years, we’ve lost count how many times we have raised the issues to MPs, police & estate management, of the hanky panky massage parlours over at People Park Complex, People Park Centre, Chinatown Point, Pearl Centre, Temple Street, Pagoda Street and the surrounding areas but till now, we still have so many of such joints operating and continue to offer sexual services.

For instance, at People Park Complex, level 2, #02-61. This shop was raided many times before and in fact, was reported in newspapers in late 2009 when MyPaper reporters reported the pink uniform ladies from this unit offering sex services. However, they still manage to operate today!!! What puzzled us is this unit can still operate after so many raids and get caught red-handed. Also, they do not follow the massage licensing requirements whereby they cannot have partitions inside with the ability to lock the door. The owner also operates a few shops at the same corner (just besides the adult toy shop) Over there, they may not have partitions but they will lock the main door whenever there is customer. These shops provide extra sexual services.

Over at People Park Complex and People Park Centre, our businesses are greatly affected by all these joints over at level 2 and level 3. We have shifted our units a few times but we still cannot avoid negative impact of these massage parlours with the scantily clad women soliciting for business. Most of our customers would avoid coming to our shops as they do not want to be harassed.

Over at Temple Street, Pagoda Street and Food Street, you can find massage parlours almost every 100m. The situation is so bad that even “ducks” start to operate regularly at Pearl Centre and Lucky Chinatown.

Majority of these joints offering sexual services such as blow job, hand job and some, full sex services. When night comes, these places become like a min- geylang where men will start to loiter around. Quite a few shops employ girls on social visits and that poses some serious health issues as they do not have the health check. We have reported the situation a few times to Police and while they did their work to conduct the raids, these joints would come back the very next day and mushroom. These women have polluted the place! Sometimes, we can even see used condoms thrown at our rubbish bin outside our shops!

We just wonder why such joints can continue to operate; especially they apparently do not have the massage licensing and operate under the false name of beauty spa. They call themselves beauty spa and yet they do not have beauty treatment equipments in the shop and would not be able to do facial treatment if the customers requested. In addition, these joints would lock their doors when the customers enter their shops for those extra services sessions.

Chinatown has lost her shine over the years due to these rampant sexual massage parlours. It’s already like a Geylang at night. Now, there are so many empty units asking for rent at Chinatown Point (at least 20), People Park Complex/Centre as no genuine business can survive because genuine customers start to avoid the area due to the strong presence of the sexual massage parlours. At least 40% of the Food Street food stalls are out of business and still put up “for rent” despite Chinese New Year is just 2 weeks away.

CK used to operate its branch at People Park Complex ground floor. However, since 2 months back, it has closed down and the premises are partitioned into smaller units. Till now, not all of these shops are rented out.

This is despite the fact that our economy grew at 14.7% last year and we have hit high records of tourists coming to Singapore. Chinatown, being a favourite tourist spot would have seen better business due to significant increase in visitors. Now, due to these sexual massage parlours, many businesses went busted and many units are now for renting out.

And who will rent these places ? Of course the pimps and new massage parlours are added, making the situation even worse and start the new vicious cycle.

Most of our decent business are seriously affected by these massage parlours. If such situation persists, we might as well behave like these foreign women to operate brothels in our shops!
