Touching on the subject of fake notes..... does anyone here know where I can get the portable device that the polis is using to confirm if the notes are fake?
I am not referring to the UV scanner that banks normally use but the handheld device the polis patrol car carry with them when they respond to fake notes cases.

I have no idea.. But I do seen before a pocket torchlight type of scanner.

That's not it..... it's a rectangular shape and look similar to a palmtop and works like a scanner..... The officer will place the note on it, close the cover and about 30s later the screen will show whether the checklist matched..... those that do not will be highlighted so the officer will know which parts of the note failed the test and zero in to confirm.

Anyway the polis procedure now is simpler and tourist friendly for those who are unfortunate to have been given fake notes..... instead of having to go down to the polis station..... now the investigator come down to the shop with the device, take a short statement from you, he will take custody of the fake notes and give you an acknowledgement form..... and you are free to carry on with your shopping. :D

If you have very old RM bank notes or other countries' bank notes, exchange them for S$ as soon as possible. Or exchange them in banks. I once brought out dated foreign bank notes to a local money changer to change to S$. I got a very bad rate because my foreign bank notes were no longer in circulation. You can keep a few as souveniers.

Above 2 are likely reasons ..
Just compare Food taste/quality during normal days n festive season you will now. CNY coming, rates likely to be manipulated again. If you have lots of $$, change few weeks usage in advance. No idea if they will manipulate this Xmas/New year..

For old notes, use them asap. esp for countries that do not have powerful currency. THB, PHP, MYR, VND, INR etc..

They might appreciate value in collectors market, but by then we will either be dead or old..

Bro, usually in JB you have to ignore the rate posted on the window and ask the money changer whats the best rate available. Then they will quote you closer to market rate.

Better to change in SG as the rates are usually better.

Even then their rates are lousy.

Kranji MRT used to have one of the highest rates in Singapore for ringgit exchange but because their supplier also supply to JB moneychangers.... the Kranji MRT has to moderate their rates to match the JB side otherwise the supplier refuses to supply them with ringgit...... so that is why the rates at the MRT are so fucked up now. :mad:

Juz changed at arcade now. Most of the units no more rm stocks. Manage to change 257.00. I think will drop further as CNY approaching like last year. Rate will reinstate after 15th of lunar. Best rate I find here is 257.20 on the last shop on the bridge. But no stocks. Good luck n happy lunar new year to all!

WWII Japanese 'banana' banknotes are going for 30 cents per note. They're like bananas- cheap. Collector's gold coins from the Singapore Mint, after 10 years, the Singapore Mint will buy them back at face value. I.e. if they show S$10, the Singapore Mint will pay S$10 for it. Your profit is zero. Antique shops might buy them for only 30 cents more. But this is on a case-by-case basis. Zimbabwe currency is practically worthless. That is a special case.

Ringgit falls to fresh record low of RM2.624 against Singapore dollar

The Malaysian ringgit hit a fresh record low against the Singapore dollar this week as several regional currencies continue to stay weak, which analysts attributed to capital outflows from emerging markets to developed markets.

The Straits Times reported that just three days after softening to an all-time low of RM2.622 against the Singdollar last Thursday, the ringgit fell further to RM2.624 at the start of this week.

It was hovering around RM2.6207 yesterday, said the republic's authoritative newspaper.

The ringgit's persistent weakness was not so much due to the Singdollar gaining strength, but rather a massive outflow of capital from the emerging markets back to developed markets, experts told broadsheet.

"Overall, in terms of fiscal and financial strength, (Singapore) is perceived to be stronger, so our currency has held up better and it looks as if the ringgit has been weakening against the Singdollar," Fundsupermart general manager Wong Sui Jau was quoted as saying.

Oanda currency analyst Wu Mingze agreed, telling The Straits Times: "In terms of fundamentals, Malaysia is not looking great, but it's not that bad either compared to Thailand, the Philippines, or Vietnam."

He added that despite coming close to a current account deficit in the middle of last year, Malaysia's trade surplus had been improving, which would help to keep its current account in the black.

The outflow of capital has hit emerging market currencies, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah among those particularly hard-hit.

One Singdollar was trading at 26.86 Thai baht yesterday evening. It was also equal to 9,611 Indonesian rupiah.

It was hard to say how long the volatility will last or how low the currencies could go, the analysts added.

However, judging by past market swings, Wu said it was likely that Malaysia's central bank would intervene if the ringgit depreciates to as low as RM3.80 against the US dollar.

Today, one US dollar buys about RM3.33.

But Asian currencies would have to ride out the volatility until confidence returns, said Wong. "When we will hit bottom, it's hard to say. But confidence will return and the rebound could be quite fast."

Companies said the weak ringgit has not affected business much.

Mike Lim, executive director of bottling firm Dr Who, which imports some material from across the Causeway, said the weaker ringgit was a cushion against general rising costs in Malaysia. "But we don't expect it to stay weak very long," he said. – February 7, 2014.
